We are living in a remarkable time, a tipping point in history. We are confronted with an ecological crisis, a political deadlock and we must adapt to the ever-accelerating digitalization of society. This contributes to an increasingly complex world, where social media dominates the narrative, resulting in a significant decline in social cohesion. Now more than ever, this situation fosters in us a strong longing for depth, nuance, and connection.

If there's something I have trouble with, it's the word 'podcast'. Not because of the spelling or pronunciation, of course, there's nothing wrong with that, but because of the expectation that the word creates. For most people, it still subconsciously stands for a (somewhat cheaply produced) hour-long conversation between two celebrities, friends, or colleagues. Preferably made 'in the spare time' and accidentally grown into a tight-knit ‘community’.

If this is the new world we are creating with AI, we are about to face an avalanche of soulless content of unprecedented scale in the short term. It will be a race to the bottom. This is the eerie feeling that has been creeping over me since Friday.

Something snapped. It wasn’t anger anymore, no frustration, no desperation. I had long surpassed those stages. I admitted defeat. It must have been about five years ago when I was in the editing room for a commercial for a major pharmaceutical company. Right from the start of the project, the advertising agency indicated that the client tends to approach things in a very data-driven manner, has a rather hierarchical organizational structure, and there seems to be little affinity with creative processes. A reality we often face, so not necessarily something to be alarmed about.
